The Avian Influenza Working Group is an ad-hoc group that serves as a platform to respond to technical questions on Avian Influenza posed by the SADC Laboratory Diagnostics Sub- Committee and the SADC Epidemiology and Informatics Sub-Committee. It was formed by the SADC Laboratory Diagnostics Sub- Committee out of a realization that the issue of HPAI was not discussed in sufficient depths for technical details at the sittings of the SADC Laboratory Diagnosis Sub- Committee meetings.
This group serves to enhance surveillance and lab diagnostic capacity for NAI; to harmonize protocols amongst countries along the lines of OIE recommended tests and to advice SADC Laboratory and Diagnostics Sub-Committee on technical needs/requirements that make laboratory’s work on Avian Influenza more efficient.
It is made up of Laboratory experts from Zambia (chair), Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and Namibia.
Through financial and technical support of the FAO – ECTAD for Southern Africa, the working group held its first meeting on the 3 – 4 March 2008. Subsequent meeting were held on 11 – 12 September, 2009 and 1 – 2 April, 2009.
